Many health professionals agree:  keeping your body slightly alkaline has an array of health benefits and can even aid in weight loss.  Generally, drinking plenty of clean water, and eating plenty of leafy greens and a wide range of organic vegetables - while limiting processed, junk and fast foods, can help keep your body alkaline.

This infographic entitled "7 Most Alkaline Foods" spotlights the following foods that are at the top of the alkalinity list:

  Spinach
  Kale
  Cucumber
  Broccoli
  Avocado
  Celery
  Bell Pepper

In addition to promoting alkalinity in the body, these foods are also powerhouses of other very important nutrients - vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that are thought to be essential to optimal health.

The infographic lists the nutritional content of each of these foods and provides a short description of its health benefits.

Lemons are known to have many medicinal and healing properties and are thought to naturally aid, relieve, improve, prevent or cure a variety of medical conditions, as this infographic explains.

Drinking lemon water on a regular basis (but especially in the morning upon waking) is one of the easiest and best ways to detox the liver, kidneys and other organs by cleansing and purifying the blood, eliminating poisonous bile and uric acid from the body and flushing out other toxins.

Lemon water is also effective in restoring the body's pH balance, which is essential to overall good health and is thought to aid in weight loss.

Alkaline and Acidic Foods Infographic from Raw for Beauty
Back in the Spring of 2012, I wrote several articles about the importance of maintaining the body in a slightly alkaline state.  Research and studies indicate that doing so is critical to having optimal health and can even aid in the prevention of cancer and certain diseases.  Food plays an important role in the body's acid-alkaline (pH) balance.

This infographic entitled "Alkaline Foods and Acidic Foods" beautifully illustrates some of the most common alkaline or acid forming foods that are eaten by Americans every day.  Not surprisingly, animal protein (including meat and dairy products), sugar and artificial sweeteners, as well as foods made from refined flour (like cereal) top the acidic food list.   Conversely, most plant foods (vegetables and grasses like cabbage, broccoli, spinach, kale, lettuce, sprouts, barley and wheat grass and peppers) are on the alkaline food list.

Another way to balance the body's pH is to add a small amount of baking soda (which is highly alkaline) to water before drinking it.  However, people taking medications for hypertension should avoid consuming baking soda or only do so under medical supervision as baking soda can raise one's blood pressure.

Acidic pH Levels and Cancer

Body pH Balance and Cancer
There is an overwhelming body of scientific evidence linking acidic pH levels to cancer.  Various studies have shown that cancer cannot thrive in an alkaline, oxygen rich environment.

Unfortunately, the typical standard American or Western diet consists of a large proportion of highly acid forming foods, such as meat, fried foods, table salt, sugar and soft drinks.

According to various health professionals, there are several easy and relatively inexpensive things you can do to normalize and maintain the body's acid-alkaline (pH) balance:

✿ Avoid acidifying foods (such as junk, processed, sugary and fast food, red meat, shellfish and soda) and instead opt for more alkalizing foods (such as fresh fruits and vegetables, plant-based protein, pro-biotic cultures like real yogurt or kefir and tea).

✿ Add approximately 3 teaspoons of baking soda to your drinking water throughout the day - seek the advise of a qualified medical professional prior to using baking soda if you have high blood pressure or other medical conditions.

 Take a coral calcium supplement.

✿ Take a green superfood supplement formulated for proper pH balance.  Green superfood also comes in powder form, to be consumed as a drink.

Acidic and Alkaline Foods: pH Spectrum

When it comes to thinking about their state of health, many people worry about eating the "right" foods, taking the "right" supplements and getting the "right" type and amount of exercise.  Efforts to maintain the body's proper acid-alkaline (pH) balance, however, is often overlooked even by the most enthusiastic health and wellness devotees.

What is acid-alkaline (pH) balance in the body and why is it so critical to good health?

It is thought that the body is alkaline by design and medical research suggests that when the body is in a slightly alkaline state, it enjoys optimal health.  However, it is also thought that, through metabolic processes, the body produces large quantities of acids which it then works to excrete or neutralize in order to maintain health.

The elimination or neutralization of acids by the body is a multi-layered, complicated process which takes place at the cellular level and principally involves functions of the kidneys, lungs and skin, as well as other organs and bodily processes.  When the body is unable to eliminate or neutralize excess acids, it becomes slightly to severely acidic.  Medical research indicates that when the body is in a state of acidity, it is susceptible to a host of various diseases and illnesses.

Of primary concern in the United States (as well as other Westernized nations) is a condition commonly known as "Chronic Low-Grade Acidosis".  Chronic Low-Grade Acidosis is characterized by a persistent presence of metabolic acids in the fluids and tissues of the body.

This condition is considered to be very harmful because, as the body constantly tries to regulate the acid-alkaline balance by eliminating or neutralizing acids, it will (among other things) use and deplete alkali minerals (such as calcium, potassium and magnesium), increase the production of free radicals, cause fluid retention and acidity of the mouth, encourage the growth and spread of fungi and yeast, and impair the function of antioxidants.

Numerous studies have shown that the consumption of certain foods and beverages has a significant impact on the body's acid-alkaline balance.  All foods, beverages, herbs, seasonings and additives are either acidic, alkaline, neutral or relatively neutral.

In reviewing and examining the acid and alkaline forming attributes of various foods, it is easy to see how and why Chronic Low-Grade Acidosis among the U.S. population is the rule and not the exception!

The infographic above illustrates the pH spectrum and lists some common foods along the spectrum.  It is an excellent quick reference and guideline.
