Heart Disease in the U.S.

Heart disease facts and statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

❣️ About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year-that’s 1 in every 4 deaths. 

❣️ Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in men.

❣️ Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, killing over 370,000 people annually.

❣️ Every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 525,000 are a first heart attack and 210,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack.

Heart Disease in Canada

Heart disease facts and statistics from the Government of Canada:

❣️ Heart disease is the 2nd leading cause of death in Canada.

❣️ About 1 in 12 (or 2.4 million) Canadian adults age 20 and over live with diagnosed heart disease.
  ❣️ Every hour, about 12 Canadian adults age 20 and over with diagnosed heart disease die.

❣️ The death rate is 3 times higher among adults age 20 and over with diagnosed heart disease compared to those without.

Risks for Heart Disease

Risks for heart disease include:

◼️ Lack of exercise
◼️ Smoking
◼️ High blood pressure
◼️ High cholesterol
◼️ Diabetes
◼️ Stress
◼️ High alcohol intake

Notably, the risks for heart disease are largely a matter of lifestyle factors and are also related.

For example, as noted in the Infographic, weight loss often results in lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and a lower risk for diabetes.

As another example, a healthy diet and regular exercise can help weight loss and reduce stress which, in turn, helps to lower the other risks, including the risks for diabetes (as well as insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome).
