The current trend in health and wellness is clear:  health-minded individuals are reducing their intake of animal protein products.

There appear to be a number of reasons for this.  Scientific studies consistently suggest a link between high red meat and other animal product consumption and an increased risk for certain cancers and other chronic diseases.  The research indicates that this may be particularly true for processed meat products - such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs and luncheon meats.  The research also suggests that the manner in which non-processed meat (beef, pork, lamb) is prepared also potentially increases risks.  Preparation methods such as grilling, broiling and frying are thought to create certain compounds that are linked with some cancers.

Additionally, increasingly we hear warnings from well-respected healthcare professionals about the improper feed (GMO products), antibiotics, hormones, steroids and other drugs that are given in massive doses to factory farmed animals.

There appears to be evidence that the drug residues in these animal products, when consumed by humans even in very small amounts but over time, may be contributing to a wide range of illnesses, health conditions and diseases.

Finally, as we learn more about the human microbiome, some evidence is coming to light which suggests that the healthiest individuals have the most diverse microbiota.  Some health and wellness experts propose that microbial diversity is achieved by eating a wide variety of natural, unprocessed whole foods.

So, eating plant-based sources of protein may be one good way of increasing the diversity of the intestinal microflora since many different types of plants are excellent sources of protein, as this infographic entitled "50 Plant Based Protein Sources" illustrates.

In addition to being a good source of protein, plant foods in general contain vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and other nutrients that are essential to optimal health and are thought to decrease the risks for various cancers and chronic diseases.

Furthermore, many of the plant foods on this list have a high amount of dietary fiber which is considered to be health protective as well as weight loss promoting.
