Although magnesium is generally present in relatively large amounts in the body, according to WebMD, magnesium deficiency is not uncommon in the United States, particularly among African Americans, women and the elderly.

Some sources estimate that up to 75% of Americans may be suffering from some degree of magnesium deficiency.

As this infographic from PostiveMed illustrates and explains, magnesium is thought to be a "super mineral" because it is needed for the proper functioning of more than 300 enzymes that keep the body functioning properly.

It is required for the proper growth and maintenance of bones as well as the proper function of nerves and muscles; it helps to regulate the metabolism of carbohydrates, maintain blood sugar levels and a healthy immune system.

Magnesium is also thought to be a vital nutrient for reducing stress because it helps to support healthy adrenal glands. Uncontrolled, chronic stress is believed to contribute to weight gain and obesity.  Some health and weight loss experts recommend ensuring a sufficient intake of magnesium to aid in weight loss efforts.

Dietary sources of magnesium include wheat bran, almonds, cashews, soybeans, oatmeal, peanuts, spinach and other leafy greens. Generally, high-fiber foods also contain magnesium.

Other sources of magnesium are mineral water and Epsom salt baths.

A Guide to Winter Food [Infographic]

The health and wellness experts agree:
eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season, and that are locally and organically grown, is one of the best strategies for increasing your health, including managing your weight and reducing the risk for a variety of chronic diseases.

Probably the biggest health benefit of eating seasonally and locally is freshness.  Freshly picked produce that is not transported over long distances retains more of its important micronutrients (the vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytochemicals).

Another benefit is cost savings: generally, fruits and vegetables are less expensive when they are in season.  Many real good deals can be found at the local farmer's market as well as regular grocery stores.

Finally, fresh, in-season produce that is locally sourced tends to be much more flavorful.  That's why picky chefs and upscale restaurants insist on using only the freshest ingredients!

Produce grown organically in rich soil has been shown to be more nutritious than produce that is conventionally grown in mineral depleted, poor soil. Organic farming does not utilize industrial chemical fertilizers and pesticides - many of which are thought to be toxic to human health.  By definition, "organic" means non-GMO.

So, what's in season during the winter months?
