Benefits of Detox Sauna Infographic Source
This infographic is entitled "Benefits of Sauna Detox from Drug and Alcohol Abuse".   Although it is aimed at recovering substance abusers, the information it contains is very useful to anyone who is undergoing detox for any reason, including weight loss and general health improvement.

Both steam baths and dry heat saunas have been around for thousands of years in some cultures and are thought to greatly aid in the elimination of all kinds of toxins that have accumulated in the body, whether that be through ingestion of certain foods, prescription and OTC drugs and medication, or exposure to chemicals.

During the intense Ayurvedic Panchakarma detoxification, a steam bath or sauna is employed as a daily ritual.

Dry brushing the skin before a steam or dry heat sauna is thought to great enhance its benefits.

Infographic: Craving This ... Means You're Missing This ...

This infographic entitled "Craving This ... Means You're Missing This ..." address various food and substance (salt, sugar, caffeine, nicotine) cravings and related challenges, like overeating or a lack of appetite.

It illustrates examples of some commonly craved types or categories of foods and substances, identifies which nutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc.) the body may be missing or needing and offers healthier food options.

Cravings for certain foods (most often junk, fast or processed food) are often what leads dieters to stray from their diets.  Even non-dieters give in to food cravings and disrupt an otherwise healthy eating regiment.

I find this infographic very informative and only wish it offered more plant-based diet options in the healthy alternative column for vegans and vegetarians.

Infographic: Alkaline and Acidic Foods

Alkaline and Acidic Foods Infographic from Raw for Beauty
Back in the Spring of 2012, I wrote several articles about the importance of maintaining the body in a slightly alkaline state.  Research and studies indicate that doing so is critical to having optimal health and can even aid in the prevention of cancer and certain diseases.  Food plays an important role in the body's acid-alkaline (pH) balance.

This infographic entitled "Alkaline Foods and Acidic Foods" beautifully illustrates some of the most common alkaline or acid forming foods that are eaten by Americans every day.  Not surprisingly, animal protein (including meat and dairy products), sugar and artificial sweeteners, as well as foods made from refined flour (like cereal) top the acidic food list.   Conversely, most plant foods (vegetables and grasses like cabbage, broccoli, spinach, kale, lettuce, sprouts, barley and wheat grass and peppers) are on the alkaline food list.

Another way to balance the body's pH is to add a small amount of baking soda (which is highly alkaline) to water before drinking it.  However, people taking medications for hypertension should avoid consuming baking soda or only do so under medical supervision as baking soda can raise one's blood pressure.

Negative Calorie Food List

Back in July, 2011, I wrote about foods that are on both the super foods and negative calorie list.  A few days ago, I came across this neat little Negative Calorie Foods List and thought to post a reminder that eating more of these nutrient dense foods (i.e., replacing these foods for junk, fast and processed foods) not only aids in weight loss but also has the effect of dramatically improving one's health.
