The Importance of Maintaining the Body Acid Alkaline (pH) Balance

Acidic and Alkaline Foods: pH Spectrum Infographic and Reference Chart |
What is acid-alkaline (pH) balance in the body and why is it so critical to good health?
It is thought that the body is alkaline by design and medical research suggests that when the body is in a slightly alkaline state, it enjoys optimal health. However, it is also thought that, through metabolic processes, the body produces large quantities of acids which it then works to excrete or neutralize in order to maintain health.
The elimination or neutralization of acids by the body is a multi-layered, complicated process which takes place at the cellular level and principally involves functions of the kidneys, lungs and skin, as well as other organs and bodily processes. When the body is unable to eliminate or neutralize excess acids, it becomes slightly to severely acidic. Medical research indicates that when the body is in a state of acidity, it is susceptible to a host of various diseases and illnesses.
Of primary concern in the United States (as well as other Westernized nations) is a condition commonly known as "Chronic Low-Grade Acidosis". Chronic Low-Grade Acidosis is characterized by a persistent presence of metabolic acids in the fluids and tissues of the body.
This condition is considered to be very harmful because, as the body constantly tries to regulate the acid-alkaline balance by eliminating or neutralizing acids, it will (among other things) use and deplete alkali minerals (such as calcium, potassium and magnesium), increase the production of free radicals, cause fluid retention and acidity of the mouth, encourage the growth and spread of fungi and yeast, and impair the function of antioxidants.
Numerous studies have shown that the consumption of certain foods and beverages has a significant impact on the body's acid-alkaline balance. All foods, beverages, herbs, seasonings and additives are either acidic, alkaline, neutral or relatively neutral.
In reviewing and examining the acid and alkaline forming attributes of various foods, it is easy to see how and why Chronic Low-Grade Acidosis among the U.S. population is the rule and not the exception!
The infographic above illustrates the pH spectrum and lists some common foods along the spectrum. It is an excellent quick reference and guideline.
